Activities
Trout River is a gateway to the vibrant local culture. Visitors can immerse themselves in the warmth of Newfoundland hospitality by enjoying traditional music and storytelling, sampling delectable local cuisine—including fresh seafood and traditional bakeapple desserts—and exploring the charming architecture of historic fishing villages. Seasonal festivals and events showcase the artistic talents of local artisans, providing a glimpse into the rich heritage that defines this community. See below just a few of our favorites in the area.
Trout River Interpretation Centre & Jacob A. Croker House
The Trout River Interpretation Centre houses more than artifacts; it brings visitors into Trout River's culture and history through various cultural workshops, visitor-involved art competitions, a talented musical lineup for the summer, plus annual events such as Wave Over Wave and Passing The Time.
Step back into time! Jacob A. Crocker's house is an immaculately kept, fully furnished, historically preserved home that would have been a standard fisherman's home from the late 1800's. This founding family relative's premises will also have student guides dressed in historical costume, re-enacting daily duties of the time period, including tending a small garden patch and fishing rack outside.
Writers at Woody Point
This annual festival in the area is a must see! Writers at Woody Point is firmly rooted in Newfoundland literature, attracting both writers from abroad and those nurtured here at home. During the festival, writers and musicians connect with their audience in intimate venues, over dinner and drinks, or on a hike into the pristine hills, and soak up the area's own creative talent at exhibits of art and crafts, musical performances and impromptu after-hours celebrations that combine jam sessions, dancing and lots of laughter. Learn more on their website and book tickets early!
The Discovery Centre
The Discovery Centre is a perfect place to start your journey within Gros Morne National park. You can learn about local geology, plants moose and caribou as well as marine life!
In 2023, a new exhibition, Miawpukek: The Middle River, was opened. It explores the stories and traditions of Conne River, a Mi’kmaw community on Newfoundland’s south coast.
